The Lion of Saint Mark is a winged lion that

symbolically represents Saint Mark the Evangelist patron of Venice

It is a symbol used to give an immediate and unique sign of identity and power

It doesn't have an official or political meaning, 

but only a popular and religious origin

St Mark, represented as a lion, is also derived from the prophetic 

visions contained in the verse Revelations 4:7

The lion is one of the four living creatures described in the book 

as a place around the throne of the Almighty and they are chosen as symbols of the

 four evangelists.

And the first beast was like a lion

and the second beast like a calf

and the third beast had a face as a man

and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle
