Y E A R

Centesimus annus (Latin for "the hundredth year") 

is an encyclical which was written by Pope John Paul II in 1991

on the hundredth anniversary of Rerum novarum,

an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII in 1891.

In the 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, Leo XIII pioneered

the Catholic tradition of protesting that under capitalism

“a small number of very rich men have been able to lay upon

the teeming masses of the laboring poor a yoke little

better than that of slavery itself.”

Rerum Novarum opened the doors to more than

one hundred years of social teaching and action in the Church,

prompted by social changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution and the Enlightenment.
